Andy Burnham Proposes Downing Street Unit in Manchester as Prime Minister
Andy Burnham, former Mayor of Greater Manchester and a potential contender for Labour Party leadership, has unveiled a proposal to establish a Downing Street unit in Manchester should he ascend to Prime Minister. The plan signifies a deliberate move to decentralise aspects of government and maintain a consistent presence in the north of England.
Government Operations Outside London
Under Burnham's vision, this new Manchester-based unit would function as an extension of 10 Downing Street. He indicated a commitment to spend a minimum of two to three days each week working from the city, intending to demonstrate a departure from the conventional, London-centric governance model.
This initiative would embed central government operations more deeply within the regions, potentially influencing policy development with a perspective from outside the capital. The proposal follows long-standing discussions regarding regional inequalities and the concentration of power in Westminster. Burnham's stated aim is to ensure that a future Labour government remains 'truly connected' with communities across the United Kingdom, particularly those beyond the M25.
