Andy Burnham Proposes New ".No 10 North." to Drive UK-Wide Devolution and Growth
Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has detailed proposals for a significant decentralisation of power across the United Kingdom. Speaking at the Convention of the North in Leeds, Mr Burnham advocated for the creation of a "No 10 North", a new government department or presence based outside London, to drive a fresh wave of devolution across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
His vision aims to shift power and resources away from Westminster, fostering what he termed "good growth in every postcode". This initiative would involve moving civil servants and decision-making bodies out of the capital, with the explicit goal of empowering local authorities and communities throughout the country.
The proposals suggest a fundamental restructuring of governance, arguing that such a move is essential to address regional economic disparities and ensure that national policy is informed by diverse local needs. Mr Burnham's plan critiques the current centralised system, presenting devolution as a mechanism to unlock potential and create a more equitable distribution of opportunity across Britain.
