Andy Burnham to Contest Makerfield By-Election Following MP Josh Simons' Resignation
Makerfield, a traditionally safe Labour constituency in Greater Manchester, is preparing for a by-election that could reshape the national political landscape. Current MP Josh Simons has announced his intention to resign, paving the way for Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to contest the seat.
Burnham's Westminster Bid
Burnham, a former Labour MP and minister, has long been tipped as a potential challenger for the party's leadership. His entry into the Makerfield contest signals a direct pathway back to Westminster, which would be a prerequisite for any future leadership bid. Sir Keir Starmer is currently facing calls for his resignation from within the Labour Party, particularly following recent gains by Reform UK in local elections.
Reform UK's Challenge
Reform UK has pledged to "throw everything" at the Makerfield by-election, with party leader Nigel Farage indicating a strong focus on the constituency. In the 2024 general election, Josh Simons secured the seat with 45.2% of the vote and a majority of 5,399, with Reform UK coming in second with 31.8%. Unofficial local election results suggest Reform garnered approximately 50% of the vote share across wards overlapping with Makerfield, indicating a significant shift in local sentiment.
Polling expert Sir John Curtice noted that Labour would face a less than 5% chance in Makerfield "if it were anyone other than Andy Burnham," highlighting the unique challenge the mayor presents to Reform's ambitions. However, constituents remain sceptical. Retired voter Stan Crook stated, "Nobody's got any faith in Keir Starmer... he's not done enough," and predicted a struggle for Burnham, believing Reform "will take over." Penelope Nelson, a nursery worker, described herself as a "fan" of Burnham but acknowledged he would "have a fight on his hands."
Burnham would not be required to resign as Greater Manchester Mayor unless he wins the by-election and becomes an MP. A defeat, however, would significantly diminish his political standing and could defer a potential Labour leadership contest.
The earliest the by-election could occur is Thursday, 18 June, coinciding with Sir Keir's attendance at a G7 summit in France. Burnham's candidacy requires approval from Labour's National Executive Committee and the local Makerfield Labour Party, though reports suggest Starmer will not impede his nomination this time.
