Angela Rayner Decides Albrighton Green Belt Appeal Affecting Future Development

Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, will deliver the final verdict on a contentious planning appeal for 170 new homes in Albrighton, Shropshire. This intervention follows a local planning inspector's recommendation to approve the scheme on the village's green belt.

Campaigners from the 'Protect Albrighton' group assert that Ms Rayner's decision could fundamentally reshape how green belt land is assessed for development throughout England. They highlight that the inspector's initial recommendation was based on the premise that "very special circumstances" existed to justify building on the protected area.

The proposed development, spearheaded by Taylor Wimpey, seeks to construct houses on a site off Newport Road. Shropshire Council had previously rejected the application, citing concerns over the irreversible impact on the green belt and local infrastructure, a decision that a government planning inspector subsequently overturned.

A spokesperson for the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities confirmed that the application is under consideration by Ms Rayner. A decision is expected to be announced on or before 17th July.
