
August Global Temperatures Equal July 2023 Record, Driven by Climate Change and El Niño
Global average temperatures for August 2023 equalled those of July 2023, marking it as the joint warmest month on record. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) reported that the month was approximately 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than the pre-industrial average for 1850-1900.
This sustained heat contributed to the warmest boreal summer (June-August) on record, with the global average temperature reaching 16.77C, surpassing the previous 2019 record by a notable 0.29C. Ocean surface temperatures also hit a new high, with August seeing an average of 20.98C across all oceans, eclipsing the previous March 2016 record.
Scientists attribute these extreme temperatures to the ongoing impact of climate change, exacerbated by the re-emergence of the El Niño weather phenomenon. El Niño typically leads to increased global temperatures as it redistributes heat from the deep ocean to the surface. However, the current intensity and persistence of the heat are considered to go beyond typical El Niño effects, highlighting the underlying anthropogenic warming trend.
The C3S data also indicated that Arctic sea ice extent was 10% below average for August, continuing a pattern of significant ice loss. These measurements underscore the systemic alterations occurring within global climate systems, demanding critical scrutiny of industrial policies and energy transitions.
