Badenoch Accuses Prime Minister of Misleading Parliament Over Mandelson Vetting
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has levelled a serious accusation against the Prime Minister, alleging he misled the House of Commons regarding the appointment of Lord Mandelson as UK Ambassador to the US. This follows a newspaper report claiming Lord Mandelson failed his security vetting for the prestigious role.
Vetting Overruled
According to the report, the Foreign Office reportedly overruled the initial vetting decision, allowing Lord Mandelson to take up the post. Lord Mandelson was ultimately dismissed from the ambassadorship last year due to his associations with the late, convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
During Prime Minister's Questions on 10 September 2025, the Prime Minister repeatedly stated that "full due process" was followed for the appointment. Responding to the recent revelations, Badenoch asserted, "We now know the Prime Minister misled the House. The Prime Minister must take responsibility." The Ministerial Code stipulates that ministers who knowingly mislead Parliament are expected to resign.
The developed vetting process, conducted by United Kingdom Security Vetting, a specialist Cabinet Office agency, is designed to ensure individuals are not susceptible to blackmail or bribery, nor likely to misuse access to classified information. This rigorous process includes checks on credit history, criminal records, and an in-depth interview covering various personal aspects.
Documents released previously outlined an earlier due diligence check, which flagged Lord Mandelson's relationship with Epstein as a "reputation risk." Further documents are anticipated, though reports suggest senior government officials have contemplated withholding information related to the vetting approval.
