More than 600 UK businesses, including prominent names such as B&Q and Five Guys, have been publicly identified for failing to pay their workers the statutory minimum wage. Government figures reveal that these companies collectively underpaid 176,000 employees by approximately £4 million.

Following intervention, the underpaid funds have been returned to the affected workers. Additionally, the named businesses face financial penalties for their non-compliance. This enforcement action underscores persistent issues with adherence to labour laws designed to protect worker remuneration.

The Department for Business and Trade's investigation encompassed a range of sectors, indicating a widespread problem rather than isolated incidents. Critics argue that while the recovery of funds is essential, the regular occurrence of such breaches highlights insufficient oversight and potentially inadequate deterrents for corporations prioritising profit over legal obligations to their workforce.
