Beijing Implements Drone Sales Ban, Requires Permits for Flights from Friday
From Friday, Beijing will prohibit the sale, rental, or import of drones and their components. New regulations also stipulate that drone owners must register their devices with the police and secure prior approval for any outdoor flights. Users will additionally be required to complete an online training course and pass a test on drone regulations.
These sweeping restrictions emerge as China progressively tightens its oversight of drone operations, citing public safety. Beijing authorities approved these measures in March, stating the necessity to bolster drone management in response to 'challenges' within low-altitude airspace. Xiong Jinghua, a senior official in the Beijing Municipal People's Congress, indicated the aim is to balance safety with technological and economic advancement.
While China has positioned the 'low-altitude economy' – encompassing drones and flying taxis – as a strategic priority projected to reach over CNY#2 trillion by 2035, its domestic drone market is becoming increasingly constrained. Last year, Beijing's entire airspace was designated a no-drone zone, necessitating air traffic authority approval for flights. With over three million registered drones in China, these new rules are anticipated to considerably impact the market, including major manufacturers like DJI.
