Belgian Car Salesman Clément Vandenkerckhove Becomes Prince Laurent's Recognised Son
Clément Vandenkerckhove, a 28-year-old Belgian car salesman, has officially been recognised as a member of the Belgian royal family. A ceremony at a town hall confirmed his paternity, establishing him as the son of Prince Laurent, King Philippe's brother.
This formal acknowledgment follows a court ruling in November 2023, which granted Vandenkerckhove royal status after he initiated legal proceedings to prove his lineage. He had long asserted that Prince Laurent was his father, a claim now legally validated.
The process unfolded quietly, with the Belgian royal household refraining from public comment. Vandenkerckhove's birth mother is said to have had a relationship with Prince Laurent in the 1990s. The prince previously faced paternity claims from another individual in 2011, which were ultimately rejected by the courts.
The addition of Vandenkerckhove to the royal line of succession is not anticipated to alter the current hierarchy significantly, given his distance from the throne. This development highlights the persistent challenges faced by European monarchies in managing private lives that often become public matters, particularly when claims of parentage emerge decades later.
