Binance Halts Blockchain After £5 Billion Exploit, CZ Confirms Hacker Targetted Bridge
Binance halted its core blockchain network on Friday after an attacker exploited a cross-chain bridge, absconding with approximately £5 billion in cryptocurrency. The breach, one of the largest in the history of decentralised finance, prompted a temporary suspension of Binance Smart Chain, the company's proprietary blockchain.
Changpeng Zhao, Binance's Chief Executive, stated that the hacker leveraged a vulnerability in a bridge linking the Binance Smart Chain to other networks. This allowed the perpetrator to mint new cryptocurrency tokens, effectively draining significant funds from the exchange's reserves. The immediate cessation of operations on the network was implemented to contain the damage and prevent further illicit transactions.
Investigations are ongoing into the precise mechanism of the exploit and the identity of the attacker. Critics have long highlighted the inherent security risks associated with cross-chain bridges, which often serve as attractive targets for cybercriminals due to their complex architecture and large pools of assets. The incident underscores the persistent vulnerabilities within the largely unregulated cryptocurrency ecosystem, where substantial sums can be lost with limited recourse for users.
