Brothers Abubakr and Umar Ben Yusaf Jailed After Deadly Welshpool Road Race

Abubakr Ben Yusaf, 31, and Umar Ben Yusaf, 27, received sentences of eight years and six years respectively after their dangerous driving led to the death of one man and severe injuries to another. The incident occurred on the A458 near Welshpool on 3 November 2024, when the brothers engaged in a competitive high-speed chase.

Newport Crown Court heard that the pair were travelling from Shrewsbury towards Welshpool when their vehicles collided with a car driven by Faud Benyunes. Mr Benyunes, 58, was killed in the crash, and his 23-year-old son, who was a passenger, sustained serious injuries. The prosecution detailed how Abubakr Ben Yusaf, driving a BMW M3, was found to be travelling at an average speed of 94mph in a 60mph zone. Umar Ben Yusaf, in an Audi A3, was recorded at an average of 84mph.

Both brothers admitted to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke criticised their 'appalling and selfish piece of driving', emphasising the disregard for safety that precipitated the fatal collision. In addition to their prison terms, both men have been disqualified from driving for extended periods following their release.
