CalMac Ferry MV Hebrides Returns, Restoring Service to Five Scottish Islands
CalMac expects to resume normal service levels on multiple ferry routes after weeks of operational disruption affecting its west coast network. This follows the return of the MV Hebrides to active duty.
The MV Hebrides is scheduled to operate on the Little Minch from Wednesday afternoon, servicing Skye, Harris, and North Uist. Engineers completed repairs on a leak in its bow visor, the forward section of the vessel enabling vehicle access.
By the end of the week, CalMac confirmed that planned service levels and designated vessels would be restored for Coll, Colonsay, Mull, South Uist, and Tiree. This includes enhanced capacity for Coll, Tiree, and Colonsay, increased capacity on Mull, and the reinstatement of direct services to South Uist.
In April, a significant portion of CalMac's fleet, 10 out of 32 vessels, was out of commission due to technical failures, annual maintenance overhauls, or staffing shortages. This disruption became a point of contention during the recent Scottish election campaign.
CalMac Chief Executive Duncan Mackison stated that the MV Hebrides' return provides a “welcome stable service” across key routes. Mackison acknowledged the “immensely challenging” period and thanked staff and island communities for their patience.
Two further major vessels, MV Isle of Lewis and MV Finlaggan, are still awaiting return from planned overhauls this month. The MV Isle of Lewis, which underwent an extended three-month dry dock period for additional steelwork, is due to commence sea trials later this week.
