Care Assistant Ciara Corvan Receives Suspended Sentence for Recording Dementia Patients

A former care assistant, Ciara Corvan, aged 28, has been given a four-month suspended prison sentence for filming vulnerable dementia patients at Craigavon Area Hospital. The court heard that Corvan recorded two separate videos of patients, disseminating one via social media.

District Judge Greg sitting at Craigavon Magistrates' Court stated that Corvan’s conduct represented a profound breach of trust. He emphasised that her actions were not only deeply demeaning to the patients, who were incapable of providing consent or defending themselves, but also caused significant distress to their families.

The Public Prosecution Service detailed that one video depicted an elderly patient attempting to exit a cubicle, while the other showed a partially clothed patient sitting in a chair. Corvan circulated the latter on Snapchat, adding a comment.

Defence counsel for Corvan described her actions as an isolated incident, characterising it as a “gross error of judgement.” The court was informed that Corvan had no prior criminal record and expressed remorse for the incidents.

Following an internal investigation by the Southern Health Trust, Corvan was dismissed from her position. Her name has since been referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which may result in her being barred from working in the care sector.
