Charlotte Blackwell Fails to Repay £14,000 Wedding Scam Victims One Year On
Charlotte Blackwell, who admitted to fabricating a wedding to swindle friends and family out of more than £14,000, has yet to reimburse any of her victims. One year ago, Blackwell pledged to repay those she defrauded to cover significant gambling debts. Her victims are still awaiting the promised compensation.
Blackwell, from Derby, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment, suspended for two years, after pleading guilty to fraud by false representation at Derby Crown Court in April 2023. She was also ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement. The court heard she had taken money from 10 individuals, including her mother, grandmother, and close friends.
The elaborate deception involved creating a fake wedding website, sending out invitations, and even holding a hen party. Victims transferred money directly to Blackwell, believing they were contributing to a legitimate wedding, paying for accommodation, or purchasing items for the ceremony. Investigations revealed that Blackwell had no intention of marrying and used the funds to service substantial gambling debts.
During the sentencing, the court was informed that Blackwell had expressed remorse and indicated a desire to repay her victims. However, 12 months on, no payments have been made. One victim stated they had received no contact from Blackwell regarding repayment. The lack of restitution compounds the financial and emotional distress endured by those defrauded by the scheme.
