Greater Manchester Mayor Confirms 700 Prisoners' Release Under Early Schemes by October

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham's administration has confirmed that around 700 prisoners will be released early from correctional facilities across the region by 1 October. This aligns with the initial schedule promised for the discharge of offenders under two specific early release programmes.

Revised Release Schemes Detailed

The first scheme, operational since June, allows certain offenders to be released up to 70 days prior to their standard licence date. The second, more recent initiative, launched in July, facilitates the release of eligible inmates up to 180 days early. This means that a total of approximately 700 individuals will have been released under these accelerated arrangements by the autumn.

These programmes apply to inmates who have served their minimum custodial term but whose full release date, with supervision, is still some months away. The objective, as stated by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, is to manage prison populations and integrate individuals back into society with appropriate support. The implementation underscores an ongoing re-evaluation of penal practices and their impact on local communities.
