Dr Mark Deakin, Alder Hey Consultant, Identified as Lucy Letby's 'Boyfriend' During Trial

Dr Mark Deakin, a consultant neonatologist at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, has been publicly identified following the lifting of a court order. During the trial of Lucy Letby, who was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others, Dr Deakin was referred to as her 'boyfriend'.

Evidence presented during the trial included a handwritten note from Letby's home, which contained the phrase 'I don't know if I ever will marry or have children'. It was alleged by the prosecution that this note was linked to her relationship with Dr Deakin.

Letby, aged 34, is currently serving a whole-life order for her crimes committed at the Countess of Chester Hospital's neonatal unit between 2015 and 2016. She faces a retrial in June for one count of attempted murder.

Alder Hey Children's Hospital has confirmed Dr Deakin remains an employee, with a spokesperson stating, 'Mark Deakin is employed by Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust. We are unable to make any further comments.' Dr Deakin's involvement in the case was limited to his personal relationship with Letby, and he was not implicated in the crimes for which she was convicted.
