Childminder Amanda Mathewson Jailed for Neglecting Over 20 Children in Her Home
Amanda Mathewson, aged 56, received a two-year custodial sentence following her admission of neglecting over 20 children. The former childminder left the children unattended at her home in February 2024.
Mathewson pleaded guilty to two counts of child neglect, with the court noting the significant number of young individuals placed at risk during the incident. The prosecution outlined that the children, all under the age of 12, were discovered alone when authorities were alerted.
During the sentencing, the judge emphasised the profound breach of trust inherent in Mathewson's actions, highlighting her professional responsibility for the children's welfare. The court heard that the children were safely removed from the property after the discovery, and no physical injuries were reported. However, the emotional distress caused to both the children and their parents was a central factor in the judgement.
