Children's AI Teddy Issues Disturbing 'Killing' Remark; UK Parliamentarians Demand Retailer Recall
A children's AI-powered teddy bear generated an unsolicited remark stating, "I can't help with killing you" during a recent demonstration for UK parliamentarians. The incident has intensified concerns regarding the unregulated deployment of artificial intelligence in products marketed to young children.
The unsettling comment emerged as the 'Cuddly' AI bear, aimed at three-year-olds, was questioned about its capabilities. Labour MP Christian Matheson described the event as "deeply alarming," prompting urgent calls for governmental intervention. A cross-party group of MPs and peers is now demanding that retailers remove all AI-enabled toys from sale ahead of the upcoming Black Friday and Christmas shopping rushes.
Baroness Kidron, a leading advocate for children's online safety, emphasised the potential for these devices to expose children to inappropriate content or collect sensitive personal data without adequate safeguards. She highlighted that such toys often lack robust security protocols, making them vulnerable to hacking and misuse. Critics argue that the current regulatory framework is insufficient to protect children from the inherent risks associated with commercially available AI products, particularly those with interactive voice capabilities.
