China Detains US Nuclear Scientist Chen Youlin for Two Years on Spying Charges
Dr. Chen Youlin, a US scientist known for his work on North Korean nuclear programmes, has been held by Chinese authorities for almost two years. Accused of spying, Dr. Chen's family maintains his innocence, describing his detention as wrongful and politically motivated.
Dr. Chen, who held dual US and Chinese nationality, was a senior researcher at a Chinese academy. He was detained in December 2022. Western diplomatic sources indicate that his arrest aligns with a broader pattern of China targeting individuals with foreign connections, often under broad national security pretexts.
His family states that Chinese state security agents seized Dr. Chen without presenting an arrest warrant or formal charges. They report that access to legal counsel has been severely restricted, and efforts by the US Consulate to ascertain his well-being have been met with limited cooperation from Beijing. This case underscores the opaque nature of China's judicial system, particularly in matters deemed sensitive to state security.
The US government has consistently called for Dr. Chen's release, highlighting the lack of due process and the potential for politically motivated detentions to impact international academic and scientific collaboration. China's actions are viewed by some as an attempt to assert greater control over information flow and punish perceived dissent, especially concerning sensitive geopolitical issues such as nuclear proliferation on the Korean Peninsula.
