China Investigates Cabbage Preservation With Prohibited Carcinogen Formaldehyde
China's agricultural ministry has initiated a probe into claims that some cabbages are being treated with formaldehyde to extend their shelf life. Videos circulating online purport to show cabbages being sprayed or dipped in a clear liquid, alleged to be formaldehyde solution, to maintain freshness during transport and storage.
Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and its application to food products is strictly prohibited under Chinese law. The practice, if confirmed, would represent a significant breach of food safety regulations in a country that is the world's leading producer of cabbages.
The ministry stated it would work with other government departments to investigate the allegations and take stringent action against any individuals or entities found to be in violation of food safety standards. Public concern over food safety in China remains high, following numerous scandals involving adulterated or improperly handled food products.
