China Recalls 2.9 Million Tesla, XPeng, Xiaomi, and Geely Vehicles for Safety Faults

China's State Administration for Market Regulation has issued a directive for the recall of approximately 2.9 million vehicles. The vast majority, some 2.5 million, are Tesla models, including the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, produced between 2014 and 2024. The stated reason for this recall centres on potential issues with the door opening mechanisms, which regulators deem a safety risk.

Broader Industry Impact

Beyond Tesla, the recall extends to other significant players in China's burgeoning electric vehicle sector. XPeng, a domestic rival, is recalling over 130,000 units of its G6 and P7 models, citing concerns over brake system vulnerabilities. Xiaomi, a technology conglomerate that recently entered the automotive market, faces a recall of more than 70,000 units of its SU7 model due to brake fluid reservoir issues.

Additionally, Geely, another major Chinese manufacturer, has been instructed to recall over 130,000 vehicles, primarily its Zeekr 001 and 007 models. These recalls collectively underscore the stringent regulatory environment in China and its impact on both foreign and domestic automotive companies, particularly as the market rapidly expands with new electric vehicle offerings.
