China State Broadcaster Halts La Liga Matches After Kylian Mbappé Joke About Chinese Football
China Media Group (CMG) has ceased broadcasting Spanish La Liga matches, including Barcelona and Real Madrid fixtures, in response to a joke made by French international Kylian Mbappé. Mbappé, speaking to the American publication Sports Illustrated, commented that his decision to remain at Paris St-Germain was influenced by the belief that he would have to play for a “Chinese team” if he left.
CMG, China's state broadcaster, acknowledged Mbappé's subsequent apology, but has not indicated how long the broadcast blackout will persist. The Spanish league is a significant presence in the Chinese sports market, with matches regularly attracting large audiences.
This incident reflects a recurring pattern where Beijing's media apparatus uses its substantial commercial leverage to exert influence over international sporting bodies and cultural organisations. Previous instances have seen similar broadcast withdrawals or content alterations in response to perceived slights or challenges to official narratives, highlighting the intertwined nature of commerce, sport, and state control in China's engagement with global entities.
