Supermarket Freezers in Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg Targeted by Suspected Cyber-Attack
Supermarket refrigeration systems across Belgium, Sweden, and Luxembourg have been compromised in a suspected cyber-attack, leading to widespread food spoilage. The incidents affected stores belonging to the Colruyt Group, including the wholesale chain DATS 24 and frozen food outlets like Okay and Bio-Planet.
Swedish authorities confirmed that stores experienced freezer temperatures artificially increased to 50°C (122°F), causing irreparable damage to frozen goods. The specific mechanism of the attack remains under investigation, but initial assessments point towards a coordinated digital intrusion rather than a physical breach.
While no definitive attribution has been made, the nature of the attack, targeting critical infrastructure for economic disruption, aligns with tactics previously observed from state-sponsored or ideologically motivated hacking groups. The financial and logistical impact on the affected retailers is expected to be substantial, with significant losses in stock and potential long-term damage to supply chain confidence.
