Chinese Conglomerate Jingye Group Pursues Legal Action Against UK Over British Steel Nationalisation
Jingye Group, the Chinese conglomerate that previously owned British Steel, has confirmed it will pursue legal action against the UK government. This follows the government's decision to nationalise British Steel, five years after Jingye acquired the company.
A spokesperson for Jingye stated the company would seek compensation, asserting that the government's move to take British Steel into public ownership was undertaken without adequate cause. Jingye, which saved British Steel from collapse in 2020, had invested £1.8 billion into the company, retaining 5,000 jobs across its Scunthorpe and Teesside operations.
The government's nationalisation effectively ends Jingye's tenure, a period marked by its attempts to modernise the steel producer. The move underscores the inherent volatility of strategic industries, particularly when material interests clash with national policy objectives, and raises questions regarding the future of foreign investment in critical UK infrastructure.
