Christopher Harborne Vows to Circumvent Overseas Donation Cap After Giving Reform UK £12 Million
Christopher Harborne, a Thailand-based businessman, has publicly declared his intention to circumvent any new government regulations designed to limit political donations from British citizens residing overseas. Speaking to the Telegraph, Harborne suggested he was the direct impetus for the government's announcement of a GBP#100,000 cap on such donations, asserting that he believes the measure could be challenged legally and has not ruled out relocating to the UK to bypass it.
Government Cites 'Foreign Interference'
A government spokesperson confirmed the cap is part of "decisive action to protect the integrity of our democratic system from foreign interference." Housing Secretary Steve Reed, however, denied the cap was specifically intended to target Reform UK's benefactors. Reed stated the rationale was the inability to trace the provenance of funds from British nationals living and paying taxes abroad, raising concerns that "hostile states, could be funnelling their money through those individuals to influence UK elections."
Farage's Unregistered GBP#5 Million Gift Scrutinised
The interview surfaces as Reform UK leader Nigel Farage faces scrutiny over a GBP#5 million gift from Harborne, received prior to Farage becoming an MP. Harborne, who has largely maintained a low profile, explained his motivation was to ensure Farage's "safety and security for the rest of my life." Both Labour and Conservative parties have accused Farage of failing to declare this substantial gift in the Register of Interests for MPs, with the Conservatives referring the matter to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner. Farage's team maintains no declaration was required, characterising it as a "personal unconditional gift that was given before he was elected."
Harborne's Extensive Political Contributions
Last year, Harborne made a GBP#9 million donation to Reform UK, marking the largest single contribution to a UK political party by a living individual. His total contributions to Reform UK in 2025 amounted to GBP#12 million. Previously, Harborne has also donated significant sums to the Conservative Party under Boris Johnson's leadership, as well as to Reform's predecessor, the Brexit Party, in 2019 and 2020.
