Colombian Military Kills Alleged FARC Dissident Leader Hernando Forero Mosquera

Hernando Forero Mosquera, known as 'Paisa Cundinamarca', was killed in a military operation. Official statements identify him as a key leader within the FARC dissident structure, responsible for extorting businesses and illicit gold mining operations in central Colombia.

The Colombian Defence Ministry confirmed the operation, stating that Forero Mosquera was among three individuals killed in the engagement. He reportedly commanded a faction known as the 53rd Front. His death represents a significant action by the state against armed groups shortly after the inauguration of President Gustavo Petro.

President Petro, Colombia's first left-wing leader, has articulated a policy aiming for 'total peace', involving negotiations with some armed groups while maintaining military pressure on others that refuse dialogue. The FARC dissidents comprise former members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) who rejected the 2016 peace accord, continuing their involvement in drug trafficking and other criminal enterprises.
