Conservatives Propose Foreign National Social Housing Ban to Free 230,000 Homes

The Conservative Party has unveiled a new policy initiative aimed at barring foreign nationals from social housing in the UK, claiming this would free up a substantial number of properties. According to their projections, around 230,000 homes could become available under these proposed restrictions.

Rental and Benefit Restrictions

Beyond social housing, the Conservatives' plan also targets entitlements within the private rental sector. They propose to prevent foreign nationals from receiving Universal Credit and housing benefits to cover rental costs, particularly if individuals are deemed to have no recourse to public funds or are considered illegal immigrants.

This initiative follows previous government efforts to address perceived housing pressures. In 2021, the then-Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick suggested a similar policy, focusing on those with no recourse to public funds. The latest proposals extend this purview, indicating a broader application of restrictions on foreign nationals' access to housing support.

The move is presented as a measure to prioritise housing for British citizens, reflecting a broader political emphasis on immigration control and resource allocation within the UK.
