Conservatives Urge Police to Scan All Suspect Images with Facial Recognition

A faction of senior Conservative politicians is pressing for the universal application of facial recognition technology to every image of a suspect handled by police forces. This move is presented as a measure to enhance crime detection and streamline investigative processes.

Kit Malthouse, a former Policing Minister, asserted that while the technology is already available, its consistent deployment remains inconsistent. He argued that the use of facial recognition should be a default procedure, rather than an optional tool, for all images of individuals suspected of criminal activity.

Critics, including privacy campaigners and civil liberties advocates, have consistently raised substantial concerns regarding the broad implementation of such technology. These concerns centre on potential infringements of individual privacy, the risk of misidentification, and the implications for surveillance in a democratic society.
