Convicted People Smuggler Identified in Leicestershire, Reportedly Working Illegally
A man convicted of people smuggling in France has been tracked to Leicestershire, where he is reportedly residing under an assumed identity and working without authorisation, all while having an active asylum application in the UK.
Habilo Diallo, originally sentenced to three years in a French prison for his involvement in trafficking individuals across the Channel, was confronted by investigators regarding his activities. The operation he managed, dismantled by French authorities, facilitated numerous illegal crossings, contributing to the perilous trade across one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
Upon his release from French custody, Mr. Diallo travelled to the UK and initiated an asylum claim. However, subsequent investigation has revealed his alleged engagement in illegal employment, raising questions about the efficacy of current monitoring and enforcement protocols for individuals with serious convictions who are seeking asylum.
This case underscores persistent concerns regarding the exploitation of asylum processes and the challenges in preventing individuals with criminal backgrounds from operating within the UK. The situation further highlights the extensive networks involved in human trafficking, and the apparent ease with which convicted individuals can re-establish themselves, even when known to European law enforcement agencies.
