Conwy Harbour Jet Skiers Remove Registration Plates to Evade Speed Cameras
Conwy Harbour authorities are confronting a persistent issue of jet skiers exceeding the 10-knot (11.5 mph) speed limit, with instances of vessels reaching 30 to 40 knots. This reckless operation frequently occurs in the narrow channel between Deganwy and the beacons, often with young children present on board.
Harbour Master Matt Forbes confirmed multiple incidents of dangerous behaviour in recent months. Efforts to document these violations using CCTV cameras, recently installed to address similar issues with speeding sailors, have been hampered by riders deliberately removing their registration plates.
Despite clear warning signs at the Beacons slipway and marina exits, alongside two yellow special marks indicating speed restrictions, enforcement remains challenging. Forbes explained that successful prosecution requires evidence of the vehicle being launched and subsequently recovered, a process they have not yet fully implemented. The removal of registration plates suggests operators are aware of the surveillance measures.
In response, warning signs have been improved to ensure speed limits are unambiguous. Water patrols have also been conducted over recent weekends, with no behavioural concerns reported during these periods.
