Daniel Day Jailed One Month for Big Ben Elizabeth Tower Ascent in London

Daniel Day, 37, has been handed a one-month custodial sentence following his ascent of the Elizabeth Tower, commonly referred to as Big Ben, in March of last year. Westminster Magistrates' Court heard that Day's actions, which included unfurling banners, necessitated the closure of several roads surrounding the parliamentary estate, causing considerable disruption across central London.

Day pleaded guilty to causing a public nuisance. During the proceedings, the court was informed that the incident resulted in a substantial police and emergency services response, diverting resources and creating a security challenge in a sensitive government area. The prosecution highlighted the cost implications and the widespread inconvenience to commuters and residents.

The sentencing reflects a judicial determination to deter similar disruptive acts, particularly those targeting iconic national infrastructure. The court underscored that while protest rights are recognised, they do not extend to actions that endanger public safety or incur significant public expenditure through unwarranted access to secure locations.
