David Lammy Criticises Kemi Badenoch Over 'Gestapo' Remark in House of Commons
Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has distanced himself from comments made by Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch, who referred to Labour's Shadow Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, as being akin to the 'Gestapo' during a House of Commons exchange.
Speaking on LBC, Mr Cleverly confirmed he would not have utilised such a comparison himself. The controversial remark was made during a debate concerning political donations and their transparency.
Labour's Shadow Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, was swift to condemn Ms Badenoch's language, characterising it as 'disgusting' and 'highly offensive'. Mr Lammy highlighted the historical weight of the term 'Gestapo', which denotes the secret police of Nazi Germany, responsible for horrific atrocities.
The incident underscores the increasingly abrasive tone of political discourse within the UK Parliament, raising questions about decorum and the appropriate use of historical references in contemporary debate.
