Defence Secretary John Healey Orders Inquiry into Harassment and Abuse at Army Foundation College

Shadow Defence Secretary John Healey has demanded an immediate, independent inquiry into numerous allegations of sexual harassment, assault, and bullying at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. This follows a detailed investigation that brought to light accounts from former cadets detailing widespread misconduct within the institution.

The allegations include instances of staff-on-cadet sexual assault, sexual harassment, and a pervasive culture of bullying among cadets themselves, often left unaddressed by college authorities. One former female cadet recounted being sexually assaulted by a male cadet, while others described an environment where such behaviour was normalised and complaints were routinely dismissed or downplayed.

Mr. Healey stated he was 'sickened' by the revelations, emphasising that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has a fundamental duty of care to its recruits. He called for a thorough and transparent investigation to ascertain what failures allowed such an environment to persist and to ensure accountability.

The Army Foundation College, which trains 16 and 17-year-olds for careers in the British Army, has previously faced scrutiny regarding safeguarding standards. This latest exposé intensifies pressure on the MoD to address systemic issues within its youth training establishments, particularly concerning the protection of vulnerable young recruits. The MoD has indicated it will examine the claims and 'take action where appropriate', though a formal independent inquiry is yet to be confirmed.
