Delivery Driver Dies in Cumbria Level Crossing Collision with Train

A delivery driver has died following a collision between his vehicle and a train at a private level crossing in Cumbria. The incident, which occurred near Haltwhistle, involved a van and a Northern Rail service travelling from Newcastle to Carlisle.

Emergency services, including the British Transport Police, were called to the scene at approximately 10:20 BST on Thursday. The driver was pronounced dead at the site of the collision. No passengers or crew on the train sustained physical injuries, though reports indicate a significant impact on their psychological well-being.

Network Rail confirmed that the crossing, which is privately owned and maintained by Network Rail, had been categorised as 'high risk' in assessments conducted since 2013. This designation indicates a heightened probability of severe incidents. Network Rail has stated it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and the Office of Rail and Road.

The fatality underscores persistent concerns regarding the safety of such crossings, particularly those with a documented history of risk. Services on the affected line were disrupted for several hours following the crash, with replacement buses deployed for passengers.
