Hampshire Constabulary Faces Oversight After Henry Nowak Arrested While Dying

Hampshire Constabulary is under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after officers arrested student Henry Nowak while he was dying from stab wounds. The IOPC's decision follows the murder conviction of one individual and the conviction of another for manslaughter in connection with Mr. Nowak's death.

Mr. Nowak, 19, was discovered by emergency services in May 2023 with fatal injuries. Police officers, arriving on the scene, placed him in handcuffs. He subsequently died at the scene in King George's Playing Fields, Brentwood, Essex. The IOPC confirmed that its investigation would scrutinise the officers' conduct during and after their arrival, particularly their interaction with Mr. Nowak.

A jury at Ipswich Crown Court convicted Leonardo Popoola, 23, of murder, while a 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was convicted of manslaughter. Both are awaiting sentencing. The IOPC's probe will determine whether the officers' actions were appropriate and adhered to established procedures when confronted with the gravely injured Mr. Nowak.
