Derbyshire Police Officer Faces Criminal Investigation Over Alleged AI Evidence Fabrication
Derbyshire Police have initiated a criminal investigation into one of their officers, following allegations of utilising artificial intelligence (AI) systems to “create evidential material in a number of cases”. The officer has been withdrawn from frontline duties, pending the resolution of the investigation.
Allegations of Perverting the Course of Justice
The officer is accused of perverting the course of justice, though no arrests have yet been made. A spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed their engagement with police, stating, “We are engaging with defence teams and the courts in appropriate cases.” They added that further comment would be inappropriate while police inquiries proceed.
Derbyshire Police stated that the investigation is in its early stages and they are collaborating closely with the Crown Prosecution Service concerning any cases potentially affected by the alleged actions. No further details have been released at this time.
This development emerges in the same week as the establishment of PoliceAI, a new national centre dedicated to AI in policing. During its launch, PoliceAI interim director Alex Murray emphasised the necessity for policing to “keep pace” with evolving crime and technology by “adopting AI responsibly to catch criminals and keep people safe.”
