Developer Fined £1m After 130kg Window Plunges from London Penthouse, Killing Pedestrian

A construction firm has been ordered to pay a fine of £1m after a 130kg window fell from a luxury penthouse in Vauxhall, central London, killing a pedestrian below. Mick Ferris, 53, was fatally crushed by the glass panel, which detached from the 14th floor of The Corniche building in July 2017.

Riney Operations Ltd., the principal contractor for the development, was found culpable for safety breaches during the installation process. An investigation revealed systemic failures in securing the large windows, leading to the tragic incident.

The ruling underscores the persistent disregard for worker and public safety within certain segments of the construction industry, where profit motives often appear to supersede essential precautions. The fine, whilst substantial, is cold comfort to the family of Mr Ferris, who are left to grapple with the profound loss caused by preventable negligence.
