Disabled People in England Granted 24-Hour Free Bus Travel from April
Disabled individuals in England will gain access to free bus travel 24 hours a day, seven days a week, commencing in April. The Department for Transport confirmed this policy alteration, which removes previous restrictions limiting concessionary passes to off-peak hours.
Currently, the statutory operating hours for concessionary passes are between 09:30 and 23:00 on weekdays, and all day on weekends and bank holidays. The new measure will eliminate these time constraints for disabled pass holders, providing unrestricted access to bus services throughout England.
This change brings the provisions for disabled people's bus passes into alignment with those for older individuals in London, who already benefit from 24-hour free travel within the capital. While the policy affects England specifically, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales operate their own distinct concessionary travel schemes.
Disability campaigners have consistently advocated for such an expansion, highlighting the limitations imposed by the previous restricted hours on employment, social engagement, and access to essential services for disabled people. The extended access is anticipated to improve quality of life and reduce financial barriers for this demographic.
