Drivers May Receive Early Compensation Offers in UK Car Finance Mis-selling Probe
UK drivers who were potentially mis-sold car finance agreements may receive compensation offers from lenders before the industry-wide investigation concludes.
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has stated it supports firms making early offers, contingent on these proposals being ‘fair and appropriate’. This stance could accelerate payouts for consumers, many of whom have paid significantly more interest due to discretionary commission arrangements, which were banned in 2021.
The regulator's probe into historical motor finance commission practices follows a surge in complaints. Thousands of individuals allege they were overcharged as lenders allowed brokers to adjust interest rates, often without customer knowledge, to increase their own commission. This system incentivised brokers to arrange more expensive finance deals, directly benefiting their own remuneration.
The FCA's investigation, launched in January, aims to determine if widespread misconduct occurred and what redress might be necessary. While the regulator has not yet set a definitive timeline for its findings, early compensation offers would represent a strategic move by lenders to mitigate potential future liabilities and reputational damage. Consumers considering such offers are advised to scrutinise the terms to ensure they reflect adequate compensation for any financial detriment incurred.
