DUP Ex-Leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson Sex Abuse Trial To Begin 26 May
The trial of Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, the former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader, and his wife, Lady Eleanor Donaldson, for sex abuse offences is set to begin on 26 May.
During a brief pre-trial hearing at Newry Crown Court on Tuesday, Judge Paul Ramsey was informed that a medical report pertaining to Lady Donaldson has been finalised. Evidence on this report is expected to be presented on Wednesday, which Judge Ramsey stated would "clear the way" for jury selection to proceed on the scheduled date.
Both prosecution and defence legal teams confirmed their preparedness for the case to commence.
Sir Jeffrey, 63, faces 18 charges alleged to have occurred between 1985 and 2008. These include one count of rape, four counts of gross indecency, and 13 counts of indecent assault.
Lady Donaldson, 59, is charged with five offences related to allegedly aiding and abetting her husband's actions. Both defendants have denied all charges against them.
Neither Sir Jeffrey nor Lady Donaldson were required to attend Tuesday's proceedings. The couple were initially arrested at their County Down residence more than two years ago.
