Durham Councillors Lyndsey Fox, Nicole Brown, Paul Sexton Depart Reform to Sit as Independents

Councillors Lyndsey Fox, Nicole Brown, and Paul Sexton, elected to Durham County Council under the Reform banner, have announced their immediate departure from the party. The trio will now sit as independent councillors, diminishing Reform's presence within the council.

A spokesperson for Reform characterised the resignations as a "betrayal of trust", particularly highlighting that the councillors were elected on a party platform. The party indicated it intends to pursue avenues for their removal from their council seats, arguing that their mandate was derived directly from Reform's political agenda and not from individual appeal.

Durham County Council's political composition sees the Labour Party as the largest group, with 52 seats. The Conservatives hold 23 seats, followed by the Liberal Democrats with 17. The newly independent councillors will contribute to the 28 members who do not align with any of the three major parties. This shift underscores the dynamic and often fluid nature of local government allegiances in the UK, where party discipline can frequently give way to independent action.
