Metal Detectorist Unearths Bronze Age Gold Bracelet in Welsh Field

A metal detectorist has uncovered a 3,000-year-old gold bracelet, weighing 300g, in a field located near Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys. Idris Thomas, who had previously only found a single silver coin, made the significant discovery during a recent excursion.

The bracelet, believed to be from the late Bronze Age, represents a substantial archaeological find for the region. Experts suggest its value could reach up to £20,000.

Mr Thomas reported the artefact to the Portable Antiquities Scheme, which documents archaeological finds made by the public. The discovery will now undergo the formal treasure process, including examination by the National Museum Wales and potentially an inquest to determine if it meets the legal definition of treasure.

Should it be declared treasure, the item would typically be acquired by a museum, with the proceeds split between the finder and the landowner. This find highlights the potential for ordinary individuals to contribute to the understanding of ancient history through responsible metal detecting.
