Baby Garroted, Concealed Under Floorboards; Inquest Hears Details of 1910 Discovery

A baby boy was found garroted with twine around his neck, concealed under floorboards in a terraced house in Hackney, an inquest at St Pancras Coroner's Court has revealed. The infant’s body was discovered alongside a 1910 newspaper during renovation work at the property.

Police were called to the address on the afternoon of 11 February after builders uncovered the remains. The court heard that a post-mortem examination concluded the baby was full-term at birth and had breathed after delivery, indicating he was born alive.

Detective Inspector Iain standing, the senior investigating officer, informed the inquest that the precise cause of death remains under investigation. He stated that the baby’s body was wrapped in a rag and had twine tied tightly around its neck. The remains were subsequently removed from the scene for further forensic analysis.

The circumstances surrounding the baby’s death and concealment over a century ago are now the subject of a police investigation. The inquest has been adjourned to allow for further enquiries into this historical incident.
