Dutch Central Bank Relocates Billions in Gold Reserves to London for Crisis Preparedness

The Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), has undertaken a substantial relocation of its gold reserves, moving approximately €6 billion worth of bullion from vaults in the United States and Canada to the United Kingdom. This strategic shift is explicitly framed by the DNB as a measure of “crisis preparedness” in response to “increasing geopolitical unrest” on the international stage.

The move sees the gold, weighing an estimated 120 tonnes, now housed within the Bank of England's secure facilities in London. This decision underscores a growing trend among some European nations to repatriate or strategically reposition their gold holdings, often citing a desire for greater control and proximity to assets in an unpredictable global environment.

While the DNB maintains that its gold reserves are allocated across four international locations to ensure diversification and accessibility, the consolidation of a larger proportion in London suggests a considered response to the perceived vulnerabilities of maintaining such assets exclusively in North America.
