East Belfast Recycling Site Blaze Requires Sixty Firefighters, Road Closures Implemented
A substantial fire erupted on Sunday afternoon at the Clearway metal recycling business, situated on East Twin Road within Belfast's Titanic Quarter. Flames and thick black smoke were observed emanating from the site, leading to a large-scale emergency operation.
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) confirmed that crews are actively working to extinguish a "large quantity of scrap metal," estimated to cover an area of approximately 50m by 50m. The firefighting effort involves nine pumping appliances, an aerial appliance, a high-volume pump, and a contingent of sixty firefighters. No injuries have been reported, and all personnel are accounted for.
Police and fire services issued advice to the public, urging motorists to avoid the East Twin Road area and recommending that local residents keep windows and doors closed as a precautionary measure due to the smoke. A police cordon was established at the Airport Road entrance to the harbour estate, and Queen's Road has been closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic to facilitate emergency access.
Belfast Harbour Police stated their collaboration with the NIFRS and Police Service of Northern Ireland following the outbreak of the fire within the Harbour Estate. Operations are expected to continue for an extended period.
