Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson Rejects 'Spiteful Class Warrior' Accusation, Plans T-shirt
Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has countered Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch's accusation of being a 'spiteful class warrior', delivered during Prime Minister's Questions. Phillipson affirmed her dedication to improving opportunities for working-class children, stating she would embrace the insult by creating a T-shirt featuring the phrase.
Speaking on LBC, Phillipson characterised the remark as indicative of the Government's priorities, suggesting it demonstrated a focus on internal political sparring rather than addressing the nation's challenges. She emphasised her background as a working-class woman from Sunderland, attributing her career to education and highlighting what she described as the Conservative Party's lack of understanding of such experiences.
Phillipson asserted that her political agenda is rooted in extending educational access, particularly for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. She criticised the current government's approach, arguing that its policies perpetuate a system that benefits a select few, rather than fostering broader social mobility. Her planned T-shirt serves as a symbolic rejection of the pejorative framing, repositioning it as an affirmation of her commitment to egalitarian principles in education.
