Eleven Children and Staff Die in Algerian Foster Care Home Fire
Eleven people, including five children, have died in a fire at a foster care home in Draria, near Algiers, Algerian civil defence officials confirmed. The blaze, which occurred at 03:00 local time, also injured nineteen individuals. Among the deceased were children aged between three and thirteen years old.
Initial reports indicate the fire started in the children's bedroom. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. The facility housed children who had lost their parents or whose families faced severe difficulties. Algeria's President Abdelmadjid Tebboune offered condolences to the victims' families, pledging government support during this period.
This tragedy highlights the persistent challenges within Algeria's social care infrastructure. Previous assessments by human rights organisations have noted concerns regarding the oversight and safety standards in state-run residential facilities across the country, particularly those housing vulnerable populations. The incident is a stark reminder of the urgent need for robust safety protocols and regular inspections to prevent future loss of life in such establishments.
