England's Resident Doctors Announce Four-Day Strike, Marking 16th Walkout Over Pay
Resident doctors across England are set to commence a four-day industrial action, from Monday, 15 June, to Friday, 19 June. This marks the 16th strike in the ongoing pay dispute that has seen medical professionals repeatedly withdraw labour.
The latest announcement from the British Medical Association (BMA) follows a meeting held with the new Health Secretary, James Murray, on Wednesday. Resident doctors previously engaged in a six-day walkout in April as part of the sustained campaign for improved remuneration.
Over the past four years, resident doctors have received pay increases totalling 33%, including a 3.5% rise this year. Current starting salaries stand at just over £40,000, with the most experienced doctors earning a basic pay of £76,500. Additional earnings can be accrued through working unsocial hours and undertaking extra shifts.
However, the BMA maintains that, when adjusted for inflation, resident doctors' pay has effectively decreased by one-fifth since 2008, underscoring the core grievance behind the repeated industrial action.
