Sheffield Shooting: Shanice Brookes Identified as Victim, Three Arrested in Murder Inquiry
South Yorkshire Police have identified Shanice Brookes, 30, as the individual fatally shot outside the One Four One bar on West Street in Sheffield during the early hours of Monday. Ms Brookes, described by her family as an "innocent bystander", was a charity worker and university student with one child.
Her family released a statement honouring her as "one of a kind" with the "biggest heart and the kind of energy you could never forget". They emphasised her role as a "deeply loved daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend and godmother," and an "amazing mum" to her son. Ms Brookes was due to graduate from university, a testament to her ambition, her family stated.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles condemned the "senseless" act, highlighting that Ms Brookes was simply enjoying a night out. "People often say innocent victims were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but Shanice was not in the wrong place at the wrong time," he asserted. "We should all be able to go on nights out and know that we will come home safely."
Three arrests were made in connection with the murder inquiry. A 30-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were apprehended near Stockport, Greater Manchester, and remain in custody after police secured an extension for questioning. A 30-year-old man initially arrested in Sheffield has since been released and is no longer considered a suspect.
DCI Knowles urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward, stressing the devastation gun crime inflicts upon families and communities. He underscored that Ms Brookes' family, including her young son, are now grappling with her loss due to "the reckless actions of others" which "have taken her life away from her."
