Epping Asylum Hotel Disorder: Jonathan Glover and Charlie Land Jailed
Jonathan Glover, 39, of no fixed address, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison, and Charlie Land, 24, from Harlow, received an eight-month sentence for their roles in a violent disturbance at a hotel accommodating asylum seekers in Epping.
The incident, which occurred in February 2023, saw a group gather outside the hotel, attempting to force entry and making threats towards staff and residents. Essex Police were called to the scene to disperse the crowd.
Chelmsford Crown Court heard that Glover had been issued with a dispersal order earlier on the day of the incident, requiring him to leave the area. Despite this, he returned with Land, participating in the aggressive confrontation.
Land was captured on CCTV footage attempting to open the hotel's fire exit doors and verbally abusing individuals inside. Glover was identified making threats to those within the building.
Both men were found guilty of violent disorder following a trial in April 2024. This conviction and subsequent sentencing highlight the official response to public order offences targeting vulnerable populations, often framed by the government as 'security' concerns requiring robust policing and judicial action.
